Four concrete goals are outlined. (1) All teachers in the nation will have the training and support they need to help students learn using computers and the information superhighway. (2) All teachers and students will have modern multimedia computers in their classrooms. (3) Every classroom will be connected to the information superhighway. (4) Effective software and on-line learning resources will be an integral part of every schools curriculum. The report outlines strategies and identifies the roles of the federal government, state and local communities, and higher education and the private and nonprofit sector. A meaningful conclusion of this report is that, after holding all other variables constant, students who took rigorous coursework in high school significantly increased their chances of staying on the persistence track to a bachelors degree. Taken together, these results suggest that, while first-generation status is an important predictor of success in postsecondary education, rigorous preparation in high school substantially narrows the gap in postsecondary outcomes between first-generation students and their peers whose parents graduated from college. Computer literacy or use is not part of this survey, which may have been informative given the importance of computers. 37 Academic Programs Note: There are hundreds of programs and thousands of courses available on line.
