Characteristics of Nurse Aides

Nurse aides work for a variety of employer types and in a variety of settings. Of the approximately 2.2 million nurse aides employed in 1999, most work either in nursing homes, hospitals, or home health care. Nurse aides compose a much smaller percentage of total employees in hospitals than they do in either nursing homes or home health care. In contrast, nurses make up the largest portion of hospital employees, and a smaller share of workers in nursing homes and home health care.
